L’histoire de l’ascenseur remonte aux temps des dispositfs primitifs de transport. C’est un appareil à déplacement longitudinal, utilisé intensivement au quotidien, pour gagner plus facilement les hauteurs d’un immeuble. Cet appareil démocratisé remplace petit à petit les escaliers interminables des bâtiments.

En effet, l’ascenseur s’ouvre à toutes catégories de personnes. Il est facile d’utilisation, confortable, rapide et possède un niveau de sécurité très élevé. Cela dit, certains utilisateurs peu habitués ou claustrophobes sont malgré tout peu rassurés à l’intérieur de la cabine. A la moindre anomalie, la panique prend facilement place.


Les innovations apportés à ce dispositif ont en fait un moyen sécuritaire pour se déplacer d’un étage à un autre.



De l’origine jusqu’aux dispositifs modernes


La facilité de transport a toujours été une des préoccupations de l’homme. L’idée d’un système élévateur a donc pris forme depuis très longtemps. On peut débuter l’histoire de l’ascenseur vers l’année 236 av. J.-C., année de la création du treuil à bras par Archimède.  Celui-ci était conçu pour actionner un dispositif élévateur et dont la description s’est faite par Vitruve.


C’est en 1743 que les «chaises volantes » du Palais de Versailles se conçurent. Ces appareils s’utilisaient par le Roi et par la duchesse de Châteauroux. Celui du Palais de Mazarin en a été aussi, doté. C’est Blaise Henri Arnoult qui s’est chargé de la fabrication à partir de l’idée de De Velayer. Au même moment on a également rencontré, la « cage à écureuil » assurant la montée de vivres au mont St Michel.


Ces dispositifs à système de levage à grue firent leur apparition à divers endroits de la planète comme à Moscou, dans le Palais d’hiver en 1793 et à Londres en 1823. Toujours à Londres, en 1929, l’inauguration de la première version d’ascenseur fût faite au  Coliséum du Regent’s Park.


Les années suivantes sont les plus marquantes dans l’histoire de l’ascenseur, à l’époque :




  • 1854, année de l’invention du frein-Parachute par Elisha Otis, en guise de limiteur de vitesse. La démonstration du fonctionnement de ce système s’est déroulée publiquement à New York, le 23 mars 1854. L’appareil qui fût le premier à en être équipé était celui d’un grand magasin de New York, en 1857. Celui-ci, se déplaçant à 20 cm/s, pouvait transporter une charge maximale de 450 kg.

  • 1864, l’année où le Français Léon Edoux a, donné le nom « ascenseur » à son invention, utilisant l’énergie de l’eau sous pression, autrement dit un ascenseur hydraulique et par lequel il équipa les abattoirs de la Villette en 1867. À partir de là, l’appellation ascenseur s’et officialisée.


En fait, même si celui de Léon Edoux constitue le premier véritable ascenseur hydraulique, il existait déjà des ascenseurs hydrauliques à vapeur, avant. Vers 1835, des industriels anglais en utilisaient déjà, en 1846, Sir, William Armstrong en fabriqua un. En 1857, Elisha Otis Graves installa une fabrique de ces modèles d’ascenseurs. Celle-ci n’obtiendra son brevet qu’en 1861.



L’ascenseur : histoire et évolution


En 1870, l’exploitation des ascenseurs hydrauliques (énergie venant de l’eau ou d’huile sous-pression remplaçant l’énergie-vapeur), s’intensifie pour marquer la fin des ascenseurs mécaniques et l’entrée plus tard, des ascenseurs électriques dans l’histoire.


C’est en 1867 que Léon Edoux dota de son ascenseur hydraulique, les abattoirs de la Villette, appelé à l’époque Marché aux bestiaux.


En 1880, le premier ascenseur électrique fît son apparition lors de l’Exposition Industrielle à Mannheim, par l’allemand Ernst Werner Von Siemens.

Vers 1889, c’est au tour du premier ascenseur électrique français, fabriqué par Chrétien, à être présenté à l’Exposition Universelle de Paris.


Toujours en 1889, lors de l’inauguration de la Tour Eiffel, le public a pu assister à la démonstration du fonctionnement d’ascenseur de 160,4 m de haut et de 0,8 m/s de vitesse, fruit des travaux de Léon Edoux et des frères Otis, fils.


Dès lors, l’ascenseur ne cesse de s’améliorer et c’est à partir de 1924 que l’ascenseur automatisé (sans liftier) a fait son apparition.


Actuellement, on assiste à des évolutions technologiques continuelles, en termes de fonctionnalités, de standing, de design et surtout de sécurité, auxquelles les grandes nations du monde prennent part.


Quatre grands groupes dominent le monde de l’ascenseur d’aujourd’hui. Le Groupe 0tis (firme multinationale américaine) se trouve toujours au premier rang. Ensuite, viennent successivement Schindler (Société suisse), ThyssennKrupp AG (firme allemande), et Koné (société finlandaise).


Ces géants de l’ascenseur rivalisent d’ingéniosité pour apporter chacun un plus à l’ascenseur. À ce propos on peut citer comme dernières innovations, Gen II pour Otis, Smart pour Schindler, Isis pour Thyssen Krupp, et Monospace pour Koné. Mais il ne faut pas oublier les avancées technologiques affichées par les Chinois ou les Japonais dans le domaine.
